During this time, though, HBP can damage your heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body. Encourage your participants to know their blood pressure numbers, even when they're feeling fine, and to pay attention to changes in their blood pressure trends as they get closer to their 7% weight loss goal!

High blood pressure affects more than 65 million or 1 in 3 American adults. About 28 percent of Americans adults ages 18 and older, or about 59 million people, have prehypertension, a condition that also increases the chance of heart disease and stroke.

High blood pressure can be controlled if you take these steps:

. Maintain a healthy weight

. Be moderately physical active on most days of the week. (Goal of the Diabetes Prevention Program)

. Follow a healthy eating plan, which includes foods lower in sodium.

. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation

. If you have high blood pressure and are prescribed medication, take it as directed.

Remember once it occurs, it usually last a lifetime.

Many participants in the lifestyle change program face the challenge of how to maintain their physical activity goal during the winter months. What should you say to a participant who is facing this challenge?
